What are some common misconceptions about your country? This the topic for my students' next Student Newspaper issue. It lead to aninteresting discussion!

Ok, me first.

New Zealand?

1. We are the same as Australians (wrong!)
2. It is clean and green (wrong!)
3. It's part of Australia (wrong!)
4. It's safe (wrong!)

New Zealand is a separate country and we are less competitive or pushy and more intelligent than Australians. OUr clean green image is just that - an image - and the reality is that we are no cleaner than anywhere else when it comes to espcially our lakes and waterways as an example. It is not much safer here than in other western countries so I tell my students to never go out walking at night alone.

I wanna hear yours! Especialyl about Korea or Japan!

    Northern Korea:

The people of northern and southern Korea share the same long >5 thousand years of history and pride, same culture, speak and write the same language. They were divided by the bigger and stronger bullying powers in the world, not by their own choice. The >5 thousand years of beautiful and yet painful history and culture will not be reduced in mere 50 years of forced division and festered mistrust.
You are very naive, and your knowledge of Korean history very shallow.

Korea does NOT have 5000 year history. that s what your highly questionable korean textbook tells you. binti, the Kims' tyranny in north has rendered an irreversible damage in the north. south koreans are probably more similar to taiwanese than they are to their northern bretheren. this is sadly the reality.

That Koreans eat dogs - TRUE/FALSE

The paradox here is that those who will say that "Koreans eat dogs" in negative context will say so by assuming that dog eating is "custom" where Koreans will eat it for breakfast or for casual brunch. Their criticism is that barbarity of eating dogs is common daily phenomena in Korean society.

But there are also who want to defend Koreans by claiming that eating dog is Korean "culture" and that people in Western world really don't have right to say whether it is barbaric or not. And these people normally do so by assuming that eating dog is daily phenomena and common practice where one can find "dog beef" in Korean supermarket or other Korean restaurant since it is part of "Korean culture".

Quoting Miss Binti.

Why do many Americans "bash" the French?
Have you experienced any negative behavior based on you being French?

Well, Binti, I often experience stupid/non-sense/negative behavior or attack from Americans... but i really don't mind. free speech and tought are very important.
One of the most common attack is:
"French people were unable to defend themselves during WWI & WWII, they should kiss the A$$ of americans"
or in a more explanatory way:
"French are pussies, they have the white flag ready before even fighting, they are just worthless..."
I don't mind their comments... usually i give an answer who, at my opinion, is "more intelligent" to their attacks.
"Be proud of being American, you could have been British... thanks to some french soldiers who help you during your Independance War."

And i could go further about remarks concerning French people but it's just unnnecessary... i'm sure you will understand
Take care Binti.

Hello all! Smiley….is back! I’ve actually spent the last few months shooting up, which is why I must have thought that Binti’s other posts were eloquent. But what a change in the last few months! Binti, are you ok? I’m sorry if your poor little itty bitty ego has been bruised in some way, causing you to become so rude and arrogant….would you like to talk about it? I’m here for you, my dear; I’ve actually helped quite a lot of people who suffer from delusions of adequacy in the professional world.

Oh, and by the way….”My own family have originally come from northern side of Korea”….I believe you meant to say, “My own family is originally from the Northern part of Korea.” However, I’m sure that was an honest mistake.
And you are obviously not Korean.

I am not here to educate you nor say you were "WRONG" as coucou does.
I do realize that it has something to do with her French/Korean style English.

Anyhow, the two seem to be the prime examples of people one should refrain from discussing politics with.

North & South Korea use the same Korean Language : (Wrong)

People say that we all using same language which can be very true.
    BUT!!
The Korean language used in the North and the South exhibits differences in pronunciation, spelling, grammar and vocabulary.

If you want to know more example of this, you can even search on Wikiperdia.
Dear Coucou,

My own family have originally come from northern side of Korea.
Please do not tell me they are different in spelling, grammar, and vocabulary. Yes, they, each state, do have their own accents but the language itself is Korean. Remember, the Korean language was invented way, way before the 50 year division.
And Wikipedia is not considered a valid scholarly reference. It would be insulting to use Wikipedia as a reference for the Korean language and history.
